In Italy, 4,000 cases of mouth cancer are diagnosed every year, more frequent in men than in women. In our country the incidence is 7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (8 per 100,000 in males and 5 per 100,000 in females). This type of cancer is very rare in young people but the incidence increases with age and reaches its peak in people over 70 years of age.
For this reason, the Order of Surgeons and Dentists of the Province of Milan, the National Association of Italian Dentists of Milan and the Stomatological Institute yesterday and today took to the streets in favor of prevention, supported by the Military Corps of the Order of Knights of Malta. “Like every year we organized a two-day event to raise public awareness – explains Andrea Senna, vice president of Omceo Milano to Adnkronos – and to promote health, in particular oral health. Oral cavity cancer is still little known , despite 4 thousand new diagnoses being recorded every year. For this reason, early diagnosis is essential. If not caught in time, oral cancer metastasizes much faster but with timely interventions it can be prevented.”
Risk factors include alcohol abuse and smoking. “The combination of these two substances – warns Senna – is an explosive mix”. The most affected categories, “elderly, because it is a type of tumor that manifests itself with advancing age”, although “there is no shortage of cases among sexually active younger people who become infected with the papilloma virus. Therefore it is essential to also understand the importance of vaccines.”
Also supporting Omceo Milano and the Milanese section of Andi is the Stomatological Institute “which made a dental ambulance available to us – underlines the expert – In total privacy we visited around 200 citizens, despite the bad weather that hit the city Saturday afternoon”.
Next appointment with the prevention of oral cancer on August 30th at the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monza. “Oncology prevention will also come into play on that occasion – concludes Senna – free visits will be offered to citizens at the Mobile Dental Unit of the Italian Stomatological Institute (Isi). The campaign is organized by the Provincial Order of Surgeons and Dentists (Omceo) of Monza with the support of the Military Corps of the Order of Malta and the Milan-Lodi-Monza Brianza provincial section of the National Association of Italian Dentists (ANDI)”.
