Reuters: summit participants in Switzerland will call for transferring control over Zaporizhzhya NPP to Kyiv
The draft final communiqué of the peace summit in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, included a clause on the transfer of control over the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) to Kyiv. This is reported by Reuters.
The agency learned that delegates were preparing to sign a document stating that Ukrainian nuclear power plants “shall operate under the full sovereign control of Ukraine, in accordance with the principles of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and under its supervision.”
Earlier, the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, said that each of the pillars of the organization’s nuclear safety was violated and compromised at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. According to him, this is affected by frequent attacks on the station and regular power outages.
On June 9, the governor of the Zaporozhye region, Yevgeny Balitsky, warned that missile attacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) towards Crimea pose a threat to the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant. According to him, missiles launched by the Ukrainian army towards the southern regions of Russia also fly over nuclear reactors, posing great risks to the safety of the station.
