A court in China sentenced this Friday (14) a journalist and an activist who had been accused of “inciting the subversion of state power”.
According to information from Amnesty International, the Intermediate Court of Guangzhou, in southern China, sentenced Sophia Huang Xueqin to five years and Wang Jianbing to three years and six months in prison.
The NGO reported that the conviction of both men, who have been imprisoned since September 2021, is related to their participation in demonstrations and online courses in the area of human rights and posts on social media about issues considered “sensitive” by the Chinese dictatorship.
Sophia was one of the creators of the #MeToo movement in China, with the aim of publicizing cases of sexual assault and harassment and providing support and legal assistance to victims. Wang Jianbing also supported the cause, in addition to providing legal assistance to people with disabilities or occupational illnesses.
“In fact, they did not commit any crime. The Chinese government has invented excuses to view their work as a threat and to attack them for educating themselves and others on social justice issues such as women’s dignity and workers’ rights,” Amnesty’s director said in a statement. International for China, Sarah Brooks.
