Javier Milei’s government classified the violent protest by leftists that took place this Wednesday (12) in front of the Argentine Congress as an “attempted coup d’état” perpetrated by “terrorist groups”.
The statement came to light through a social media post from the Office of the Presidentwho also congratulated the country’s Security Forces in the post for “their excellent performance” in repressing violent protesters, who, according to the government, were “armed with sticks, stones and even grenades”.
“The President’s Office congratulates the Security Forces for their excellent performance in repressing the terrorist groups that, with sticks, stones and even grenades, tried to perpetrate a coup d’état, violating the normal functioning of the National Congress”, he wrote.
This Wednesday, leftist protesters called by the hard core of Kirchnerism and the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), the Peronist union, decided to go in front of the Argentine Senate to protest against the approval of Milei’s Basic Law project, which proposes the deregulation of the economy and a strong fiscal adjustment.
The protest escalated and turned into a huge riot, with leftists setting fire to a press car and attacking police officers with Molotov cocktails. The agents retaliated by releasing stun bombs, using water jets and even pepper gas.
The demonstration did not hinder the functioning of the Senate, which is currently continuing to discuss the project sent by the libertarian government.
According to information from Clarín, in a speech at the Fundação Libertad y Progreso, Milei accused Kirchnerism of “fostering a destabilizing plan in Argentina.” The president also accused the opposition of wanting to “throw dead people in the streets” as a political tactic.
When speaking about the protests, Patricia Bullrich, Minister of Security, echoed the government’s tone. In posts on social media, Bullrich said that those responsible for the acts of violence “will pay one by one” for the damage caused, including to the burned car of the Cadena 3 radio station.
With a firm stance, Milei’s minister reiterated that, under the current administration, “whoever commits infractions, pays”.
