Spiegel: China’s refusal to participate in the Ukraine summit disappointed Zelensky
China’s refusal to participate in the summit on resolving the conflict in Ukraine, which will be held in Switzerland on June 15-16, was a bitter disappointment for Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and the German government. The reaction of the Ukrainian leader is reported Der Spiegel citing a senior German diplomat who wished to remain anonymous.
“China’s participation, even in the form of a special envoy, would give the summit much more weight. Important regional powers such as Brazil and Saudi Arabia are also apparently reluctant to send heads of state and government.
The source said it was unlikely that countries in the Global South would “be in on the action.”
Previously, the presence of non-Western countries was called a condition for the success of the Swiss conference on Ukraine. It is noted that Zelensky intends to persuade the majority of countries to approve his “peace formula” in order to then confront Moscow with a fait accompli rather than start negotiations.
