Mogadishu (Al-Ittihad)
Yesterday, the Somali government announced the killing of 47 members of the Al-Shabaab movement and 5 army soldiers, in a military operation in the “Ail Tair” region in the center of the country. A statement by the Somali Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism explained that “the army killed 9 Al-Shabaab fighters in an attack outside the city of Alibale,” according to what was reported by the Somali news agency “SONA.” According to the agency, the army was also able to eliminate 18 members of the terrorist Al-Shabaab movement, and confiscated military vehicles and equipment in their possession, between the “Ali Yibal” and “Ail Tir” areas. The army also killed 20 other Al-Shabaab terrorist members in an air strike in the area.
The ministry’s statement also indicated the killing of 5 army personnel and local fighters, explaining that “the army is still pursuing the remains of terrorists fleeing justice outside the city.”
This operation comes two weeks after the killing of 20 militants from the terrorist Al-Shabaab movement in a joint military operation between the Somali army and international partners in the Alamdo mountains in the Puntland region (northeast).
For years, the Somali government has been waging a war against the Al-Shabaab movement, which was established in early 2004 and became affiliated with the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda. Since then, it has claimed responsibility for many terrorist bombings that have claimed the lives of civilians and members of the Somali army and police.
The movement was expelled from the main cities in 2012, and some of its remnants remained in rural areas, holed up in forests and mountains.
