This Saturday morning, the 8th, the economist died Maria da Conceição Tavares, at 94 years old. Considered one of the main references in the field of economics, she stood out for her contributions to developmental thought and her role in the training of several generations of Brazilian economists.
Maria da Conceição Tavares was born in Anadia, in Aveiro, Portugal, but grew up in Lisbon. Her career in Brazil was marked by important stints at the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and the Heavy Mechanical Industry Executive Group (Geimape). Furthermore, she also worked at the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), where she developed work influenced by great economists.
Among his most important works, ‘Rise and Decline of the Import Substitution Process in Brazil’, from 1972, stands out, which provided in-depth analyzes of the Brazilian economy and its transformations.
