Veteran Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani announced his retirement from international football. Cavani’s retirement came as a surprise, as he was chosen by Argentine Marcelo Bielsa, coach of the Uruguay national team, to participate in the South American Football Championship (Copa America), which begins in the United States this month. Cavani, 37 years old, wrote on his Instagram account, “I was and will always be lucky, because I wore this shirt that represents what I love most in this world, my country.” The message said: “I have decided to end my career with the Uruguay national team, but I will forever continue to follow the team with my beating heart, as was the case when it was my turn to take to the field wearing this beautiful shirt.”
For its part, the Uruguayan Football Association announced in a post on the (X) social networking site, “Edison Cavani announced his retirement from international football after 136 international matches, 4 World Cup appearances, the Copa America title and 58 goals. Thank you for everything, you are a legend.
Cavani is currently playing for his Argentine club, Boca Juniors, where he is having a good season, scoring 12 goals in 18 matches. Cavani has previously played for major European clubs, including Napoli in Italy, Paris Saint-Germain in France, and Manchester United in England.
