The funeral industry in Italy is changing, which today has around 6 thousand companies, 60 thousand employees, 700 funeral homes and an annual turnover of over 3 billion euros.
In recent years, this sector has seen the progressive downsizing of the traditional funeral rite and the contemporary boom in cremations, the abandonment of mortuaries as places of mourning with the notable growth of funeral homes, in addition to the decadence and degradation of cemetery areas .
Federcofit’s alarm
This is what Federcofit (Italian Funeral Industry Federation) highlights, in view of the 9th national congress which will take place the day after tomorrow 29 May at the Fontana di Trevi Congress Center in Rome. This event, which will also celebrate the 25th anniversary of the federation, will see the participation of various political representatives, local administrators and entrepreneurs, who will first of all discuss the state of the legislation in this sector, with the aim of identifying inclusive paths that align the main public players and private individuals involved to offer joint and harmonious solutions to politics.
President
“The state has not legislated on the funeral sector for 35 years, since the national mortuary police regulation was issued in 1990,” declares Cristian Vergani, national president of Federcofit. “It is therefore increasingly urgent to start the process for the approval of a national law that regulates this sector, avoids abuses and illegalities and guarantees the best service to grieving families. In recent years, almost all regions have had their own legislation, which however is still missing in Lazio. We therefore ask for precise rules for the management of funeral businesses, for the training of staff and for the protection of people affected by bereavement, as well as the solution to serious dysfunctions such as, in particular, the need to continuously transfer bodies destined for cremation for hundreds of kilometres. It is also necessary to address the serious crisis of cemeteries which, in addition to complicating and prolonging burial procedures, risk losing an important historical, cultural and artistic heritage”.
The congress
The Federcofit congress, which will be opened in the morning by the greeting of the national president Cristian Vergani, will see speeches among others by Roberta Angelilli, vice president of the Lazio Region, Daniele Sabatini and Giorgio Simeoni, respectively group leaders of FdI and FI in the Lazio regional council , Piero Comandini, president of the regional council of Sardinia, Maurizio Sguanci, regional councilor of Tuscany, Angelo Vaccarezza, regional councilor of Liguria, and Andrea Zuccaroli, director of Ama-Cimiteri Capitolini. Entrepreneurs and professionals from the funeral sector from all over Italy will also participate. In the afternoon, the meeting of Federcofit members is scheduled, with the plan for the renewal of management positions, statutory adjustments, approval of accounts, the qualitative and quantitative balance of the work carried out in the last three years and a discussion on the policy federative in relation to the state of the market and institutions.
