General Ivan Popov was again refused to soften his preventive measure
The 235th Garrison Military Court rejected the investigation’s request to transfer the former commander of the 58th Army, Major General Ivan Popov, from the pre-trial detention center (SIZO) to house arrest. The meeting was held behind closed doors.
Popov’s reaction to the court’s decision was caught on video: the military man laughed and waved his hand clenched into a fist.
The investigation asked for Popov’s transfer to house arrest
At the request of a representative of the military prosecutor’s office, the meeting was held behind closed doors. According to the position of the investigation, it was necessary to close the process to ensure security, since Popov is an active officer participating in a special military operation. In addition, the court named the address of the accused, where he was supposed to be during house arrest.
At the meeting, Popov was in the so-called aquarium, whereas last time he sat at the table next to the lawyer, notes TASS.
The investigation requested the transfer of the general from the pre-trial detention center.
The investigator’s request to change the preventive measure from detention to house arrest is refused.
After the court’s decision, one of the women in the room asked: “What do you think? Everything is fine?” Popov smiled and waved his fist.
The defendant’s lawyer, Sergei Buinovsky, clarified that the prosecutor opposed changing the preventive measure for the general.
Popov faces up to ten years in prison for fraud
According to investigators, Popov was involved in the theft of more than 1,700 tons of rolled metal products, which were purchased by the military-civil administration of the Zaporozhye region. Materials worth over 130 million rubles were intended for the construction of defensive structures on the contact line.
On May 17, the court arrested the ex-commander of the 58th Army for two months under Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code (CC) of Russia (“Fraud committed by an organized group or on a particularly large scale”). He faces up to ten years in prison. Previously, the court had already refused to soften Popov’s preventive measure.
