The attack on a hardware store in Kharkiv shows that Russia is increasingly attacking civilian targets. Zelensky is therefore calling for better air defense.
Kharkiv – “Another manifestation of Russian madness.” This is how Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, described an attack by the Russian army during his daily video address on Saturday evening (May 25) on X (formerly Twitter). Oleh Syniehubow, head of the Kharkiv regional administration, wrote on Telegram that a hardware store in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv had been hit by two Russian aerial bombs.
Attack on Kharkiv: Russia apparently bombs hardware store with glide bombs
According to media reports, Russian glide bombs may have been used, which are said to have been used in the attack on the hardware store in Kharkiv. “We have a large number of missing people. There are many injured,” writes Syniehubow. According to him, the attack was aimed at the many civilians who were in the market during the air strike.
According to Zelensky, there were more than 200 people in the market at the time. At this point in time, at least two civilians are known to have been killed and 24 injured.
Putin’s armed forces attack Kharkiv: No military base nearby – is Russia deliberately attacking civilians?
As the Ukrainian news site Ukrainska Pravda reported, there are no military installations near the hardware store that was hit. “Apparently, the attack was aimed at the shopping center, where many people gathered – this is pure terrorism,” is how the city’s mayor, Ihor Terekhov, described it on Telegram after the attack on Kharkiv by Putin’s forces.
Russia has been bombing the city in eastern Ukraine for several months during the Ukraine war. Guided bombs and surface-to-air missiles hit the metropolis almost daily. As the Daily Mirror reported that the army of Russian President Vladimir Putin had concentrated primarily on the energy infrastructure. But now residential buildings and companies are being targeted – with serious consequences for the civilian population.
Russia’s attack on hardware store in Kharkiv: “Madmen like Putin” – Selenskyj demands delivery of air defense
“If we had more adequate and modern air defense systems and aircraft, the Russian air fleet would of course be defeated just like its Black Sea fleet,” writes Zelenskyj on X. With reliable air defense, “Russian terror” such as the attack on the hardware store in Kharkiv is impossible. The president describes the shooting down of Russian missiles and fighter planes as “real peacekeeping.”
“Only madmen like Putin are capable of killing and terrorizing people in such a heinous way,” Zelensky continued. He thanked all heads of state and government who understand “that every decision to support Ukraine is about protecting and saving lives.”
Selenskyj shares video – footage shows attack on hardware store in Kharkiv
There are now many images on social media showing the attack on the hardware store in Kharkiv. Selenskyj also shared one of the videos on X. The video shows thick black smoke pouring out of the supermarket. Shortly afterwards, a fire broke out, which, according to Syniehubow, spread over an area of 15,000 square meters. 15 employees of the hardware store are still unreachable, the AFP citing the mayor of the city.
One reason for Russia’s aggressive actions could be the massive losses in Kharkiv. These are eight times higher among Putin’s troops than in Ukraine, said Selenskyj during an interview with Kyiv Independent The Kazakh news channelVlast he said that the Russian ruler “has absolutely no regard for human life.” (nhi)
