The news of the Qualifying
The thread is broken. After seven consecutive pole positions in the first seven races, Max Verstappen missed pole in Monaco and finished Q3, they are in sixth position, which gives him the third row for tomorrow. The best of all, however, was the local idol, the dominator so far of this weekend between free practice and qualifying: Charles Leclerc.
For the Monegasque from Ferrari, this is the third career pole in front of his home crowd and the dream is to finally break the curse that has never seen him winning, on his podium, on his home roads. The front row is completed by a phantasmagorical Oscar Piastri, with McLaren, while the second row is the prerogative of their respective box mates, Sainz and Norris. Fifth position for George Russell’s McLaren. Disappointments of the day instead were Alonso and Perez, both surprisingly eliminated in Q1. The first three were interviewed by Loic Duval.
The words of the top-3
Charles Leclerc (1st, Ferrari): “Today was nice, the sensations after a qualifying lap here are very special. I’m happy with my ride. The enthusiasm is great, but I know well – after the past – that qualifications are not everything. We have to put everything together tomorrow, but now we are a stronger team, in a stronger position. We can do great things tomorrow, the goal is victory. What to do? I have to get off to a good start. Then let’s hope that Carlos is behind me in turn 1. If we are 1-2 we can manage the match as a team: that would be the perfect scenario. Whatever happens we have to bring the victory home.”.
Oscar Piastri (2nd, McLaren): “What were we missing? Good question. Putting together the best points from the first and second laps perhaps it would have been enough. I made some mistakes at the end, but you have to give credit to Charles who was incredibly fast all weekend. At a certain point no one thought they could get close to him. Starting from the front row is good, we have built a good rhythm. And having Senna’s colors on helps. Tomorrow we will need a good start, if we took the lead it would be perfect. Otherwise there is the strategy card, because overtaking here is not easy. We will try to start well and do our best.”
Carlos Sainz (3rd, Ferrari): “For me it was a nice improvement over the course of the weekend. I struggled a lot, I lacked confidence in the car. All in all, being third is good progress. I would have liked to work for pole, but Charles did an exceptional job. He knew how to extract the most from the car. I’m happy for him. Long run? Yesterday I seemed very strong, we have to focus on that. I’m confident I’ll have a good pace tomorrow, but track position matters a lot here. The priority will be to win with Charles tomorrow.”.
