A key element of Russia’s military control was damaged by a Ukrainian drone. Tensions are rising.
Moscow/Kiev – According to reports, a radar of the Russian early warning system for incoming nuclear missiles was damaged in a drone attack by Ukraine. The US Institute for War Studies (ISW) reported on Friday evening that images of damage to the facility near the southern Russian city of Armavir had appeared in Russian and Ukrainian channels.
Dmitry Rogozin, the former Russian ambassador to NATO and current senator in the Russian Federation Council, commented on the incident on the social network X on Saturday. He spoke of damage to the early warning system, which he described as “a key element of the military control of strategic nuclear forces”.
Russian nuclear warning system hit: Ukraine drone finds its target at a sensitive time
Rogozin accused the US of either planning the attack or at least knowing about it. He warned that such actions would bring “the world closer to the brink of nuclear war.” Neither the Kremlin nor the Russian Defense Ministry commented on the matter.
According to reports, the attack in the Ukraine war took place on the night of Thursday, when Ukraine also attacked a Russian army communications hub on the Crimean peninsula near Alushta with missiles. The affected Russian early warning radar, a Voronezh-DM type near Armavir, can supposedly detect incoming nuclear missiles at a distance of 6,000 kilometers. It monitors the airspace over Crimea and southwestern Europe as far as the Atlantic in a series of radar stations.
“Targets to be avoided”: Expert on Ukraine hit in Russia’s nuclear system
The attack was reportedly carried out using a Ukrainian drone. This came at a time when Ukraine is negotiating with its Western partners to be allowed to use their weapons against targets in Russia. Thord Are Iversen, an independent Norwegian military expert, commented on the incident on X. He wrote that attacking such facilities in times of international tension is not a good idea. “There are tons of targets in Russia that you can attack with drones. And there are a handful of targets that you avoid, and this is one of them.”
At the same time, bitter loss figures for Russia were made public. (rjs/dpa)
