Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) deactivated this Friday, 24th, the Secretariat of International Business. The measure was taken one day after secretary Lucas Ferraz asked to be removed from command of the department. He had been sidelined in the government for about a year, after a controversy involving the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and the attraction of investments to São Paulo.
According to the São Paulo government, it is the first restructuring of the departments after the publication of the “São Paulo in the Right Direction” plan. The portfolio’s activities were transferred to the Civil House and the Secretariat of Economic Development. As Estadão showed, the governor’s plan is to carry out studies to abolish bodies, review tax benefits and cut funding expenses to make the public machine more efficient.
The Economic Development Secretariat will be responsible for attracting foreign investment to São Paulo and promoting foreign trade, while the Civil House will take care of cooperation actions with governments of other countries and international entities. The latter will have 30 days to publish a resolution informing which positions will be eliminated or transferred to other departments.
The Secretariat for International Business declared in April 2023 that representatives of the Ukrainian state-owned aviation company Antonov showed interest in investing US$50 billion in the State, but had retreated due to Lula’s statements about the war in Ukraine.
Antonov, however, denied the information at the time and stated that it had no representatives in Brazil, which led ministers from the PT government to accuse the Tarcísio government of spreading fake news.
