The Australian Federal Police are investigating a bakery in Sydney that made a cake and cupcakes with images of a member of the terrorist group Hamas and Palestinian flags for a four-year-old boy’s birthday.
Many of the sweets had the image of Abu Ubaida, spokesman for the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas. The cake and cupcakes were made by a bakery called Oven Bakery by Fufu, who took the images off their social media after receiving several criticisms. The establishment did not comment on the matter.
According to the British newspaper The Telegraph, Chris Minns, prime minister of the Australian state of New South Wales, said that the images on the sweets were “horrible” and that “children’s parties should be innocent and fun, not hateful”.
The executive president of the Australian Jewish Association, Robert Gregory, highlighted to the Australian Daily Telegraph that images posted on social media also showed the birthday boy dressed “as a terrorist, including with what appears to be a Hamas bandana”, which he called “a form of child abuse.”
“Islamic extremism and the radicalization of youth are not just a problem for the Jewish community. It is a threat to all Australians,” she said.
