Proposal signed by Celso Amorim and the Chinese Foreign Minister cites recommendations for a ceasefire
The chief advisor of the Special Advisory to the Presidency, Celso Amorim, signed this Thursday (May 23, 2024) a proposal defending a “political resolution” for Ukraine’s conflict with Russia. The declaration was made in partnership with the Chinese government and signed by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
In the text, the 2 governments say they believe that negotiation is the “only viable solution” for the crisis. The document advocates that conditions be created for the resumption of direct dialogue to promote “de-escalation” situation until those involved reach a ceasefire.
“Brazil and China support an international peace conference held at an appropriate time, which is recognized by both Russia and Ukraine, with equal participation by all relevant parties, in addition to a fair discussion of all peace plans”, says the text. Here’s the complete (PDF – 94 kB).
Countries released a series of “common understandings” so that the conflict can come to an end through negotiations.

Another request is to avoid “division of the world into isolated political or economic groups”. The Brazilian and Chinese governments speak of efforts to reinforce international cooperation, in addition to inviting other countries to endorse and support the aforementioned understandings.
