On Monday, the Ukrainian army made a statement regarding the situation on the battle front in the Kharkiv region, which is witnessing an incursion by the Russian army.
In a statement on Facebook, the Ukrainian General Staff acknowledged that the Russian army is “currently achieving tactical successes,” adding that there are “ongoing battles in the border city of Vovchansk,” where Moscow has mobilized “up to five battalions,” according to Kiev.
The “Debstate” channel, via the Telegram application, which is close to the Ukrainian army, reported that the Russians were able to control a strip of approximately 70 square kilometers in the Liptsi region and another strip of 34 square kilometers towards Vovchansk.
Ukrainian military journalist and blogger Yuri Butusov noted that “during the first day of the attack” on Friday, the military commander of the Kharkiv region was replaced “due to some problems.”
The evacuation of residents, the majority of whom are elderly, continued. “We were not ready to leave,” Lyuda Zelenskaya, 72, said. Like her, Lyuba Konovalova (70 years old) recalled the “terrifying night” before the evacuation.
Oleh Sinyhopov, governor of the Ukrainian Kharkiv region, explained that 5,762 people have evacuated their towns since the start of the fighting.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said yesterday evening, Sunday, that “defensive battles and violent fighting are taking place on a large part of our borders. The idea behind the attacks in the Kharkiv region is to exhaust our forces and undermine the morale” of the Ukrainian army.
Since Friday, Russian forces have crossed the Ukrainian border to launch an attack towards the towns of Liptsi and Vovchansk, located about twenty and fifty kilometers, respectively, northeast of Kharkiv, the country’s second city.
