Impacts were felt in Caxias do Sul, Bento Gonçalves and Pinto Bandeira during the early hours of the morning; geologist talks about rock layer accommodation
The city of Caxias do Sul, located in Serra Gaúcha, registered 2 earthquakes in the early hours of this Monday (May 13, 2024). The tremors, measuring 2.3 degrees, were felt at 2:58 am and 3:03 am in 4 neighborhoods in the city: Jardim América, Universitário, Madureira and Pio X. In notethe Municipal Environment Secretariat said there was no risk to the population.
Two other tremors were also observed in the region. The 1st was 2.4 degrees at 1:48 am in Bento Gonçalves. The 2nd, also 2.4 degrees, was in Pinto Bandeira at 2:37 am. The information comes from the UnB Seismology Observatory (University of Brasília).
The secretariat’s director of Environmental Management, geologist Caio Torques, stated that they are accommodations for underground rock layers, as has been seen in the past. In 2008, 2010 and 2023, similar occurrences were recorded in Caxias do Sul.
The geologist stated that the excess rain in the last two weeks may have accelerated these accommodations due to the lubrication caused by the water. “Events of this type do not have destructive power, residents can rest assured. So far we have not detected any major landslides in the vicinity of where they were felt.”said Torques in the text released by City Hall.
Internet users also commented on the tremors on social media and shared videos of people outside their homes after the tremors.
