Sharjah (Al-Ittihad)
The Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival provided the opportunity for young people to acquire the skill of creative writing, with the aim of creating a culture of connection to literature from the formative stage, and enhancing the appropriate tools in front of them to be able to build a creative text with its integrated elements, starting from the idea, all the way to its emergence as a text in the hand of the reader.
collected d. Wafa Al Shamsi, a specialist in children’s and young people’s literature, brought together a group of young students, in a workshop entitled “Creative Writing Workshop for Young People”, within the activities of the 15th session of the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival, where she divided them into two groups to participate in writing a creative text and identifying its various elements.
The workshop was divided into two parts, the first of which is theoretical, related to the structure of writing a story and relying on the writer’s connection to the data of the surrounding environment, and the second is the practical part, which is “writing” by reviewing models and providing feedback to identify the basics of story writing.
Al Shamsi presented the students with a set of stones to use in creating a fictional character and drawing it on those stones, then placing it in a problem, so that the students sought to find a solution to it by formulating a story inspired by their ideas.
Al Shamsi said that the creative writing workshop depends on connecting young people to the field of literature and stimulating the mind to create interconnected ideas from beginning to end, explaining that the theoretical part depends on explaining the structure of writing a story and how to connect the writer and the surrounding environment, while the practical part focuses on reviewing different models of writing and the mechanism of transition. From one event to another within the story, all the way to the end.
Al Samsi pointed out the importance of explaining the idea of story composition to young people to help them start writing, explaining that there is no specific age to start creative writing, but at the same time there are certain data that relate to academic and artistic preparation, the acquisition of skills, and the extent of the writer’s mastery of his tools.
