When an employee at an ice cream parlor in the US state of Minnesota receives a generous tip, she can hardly believe her eyes. But that leads to problems.
Minnesota – Terminations do not always happen for reasons that are understandable to employees. Sometimes, however, the reason why an employer fires an employee seems bizarre. A prime example of this is a case that recently occurred in the US state of Minnesota.
In the small town of Moorhead, right on the border with North Dakota, an employee of an ice cream parlor was fired because she accepted an overly generous tip from a customer. Emily Swenson, an employee of the ice cream parlor The Freez, is said to have received a total of 100 dollars, the equivalent of around 93 euros, after serving the woman, the US newspaper reported New York Post. But how did the customer end up giving her such a generous tip?
“Nobody in their right mind tips $100.”
She could possibly be suffering from dementia – at least that’s what Swenson’s superiors assumed in the explanation that accompanied her warning. She received this on April 24, two days after the incident, for the purpose of “corrective action.” She had previously worked in the ice cream parlor for five years.
“No one in their right mind leaves a $100 tip at a place where every menu item costs under $12,” the message to Swenson said. Emily needs to understand that some of the ice cream parlor’s customers are older and have dementia or others Diseases may have struggles that make it difficult for them to consciously control their own actions, The Freez statement continues.
Parents of the terminated employee draw attention to the case on Facebook
In order to counteract their daughter’s bizarre dismissal, Emily’s parents drew attention to her fate with a post on the social network Facebook. “Our daughter was offered a $100 tip and told the customer she couldn’t accept it. The customer put $100 in the tip jar and drove away,” said the statement from Seth and Lisa Swenson.
“Our daughter appreciates the generosity of the lady who tipped her and feels that this kind lady is in no way responsible for the incident,” the Swensons continued. Emily’s parents point out that there is no information in the guidelines of their daughter’s employer as to the level above which a tip may not be accepted.
The terminated employee’s superiors explain: “There’s more to the story”
The ice cream parlor The Freez defended itself against the Swensons’ Facebook post the day after it. Emily’s former bosses in charge claimed that she wasn’t fired just because of the tip case. “We did not terminate the adult employee of 5 years for accepting a tip. There’s more to the story,” The Freez officials said in a Facebook post.
They don’t want to go into detail because the reasons in question are a personal matter. “However, we believe that parents who advocate for an adult child have not asked their adult daughter the right questions. We are a small company built on a strong work ethic and Moorhead values. Our values and expectations reflect those of the community and our customers,” they emphasized.
Back in February, a waitress at a cafe in the US state of Michigan was fired after she shared a $10,000 tip with her colleagues at the reception, the US news portal reported WNDU. As a result, the kitchen staff became upset as none of them received a share of the generous gift. The anonymous man who left the tip in honor of his late friend had asked that the $10,000 be divided among the wait staff. A total of eight waiters each received just over $1,200. (fh)
