Commanders of the Armed Forces mourned the death of defense journalist Roberto Godoy, who died this Friday, 29, at the age of 75. General Tomás Ribeiro Paiva, commander of the Army, and Brigadier Marcelo Kanitz Damasceno, commander of the Air Force, highlighted the importance of Godoy's journalistic work for the country.
“I receive with deep regret the news of the death of journalist Roberto Godoy, a competent and respected professional, who made an invaluable contribution to journalism. I convey my solidarity to family, friends and Brazilian press professionals, and my salute to the work carried out by my friend Roberto Godoy”, said Ribeiro Paiva.
The general also mentioned the relevance of Godoy's work. “A distinguished expert on military topics, he contributed greatly to the dissemination of the work of the Brazilian Army, as well as the Defense of our Country, in debates, articles and coverage”, he stated.
Brigadier Damasceno, commander of the Air Force, highlighted the loss of “a great professional” and “a correct citizen”, considered a “reference”. “His importance in dealing with our military agenda made us even more recognized. Thus, his role was fundamental in this aspect of journalism, where each piece of news broadcast was essential to clarify the real role of our Forces,” he said. “May God receive good on this Good Friday.”
Roberto Godoy was one of the most awarded journalists of his generation. He was born in Campinas on January 18, 1949 and began working early at Correio Popular, the family newspaper in the city, in which his parents were minority partners. He started collecting awards at a very young age. He was hired by Estadão as head of the Campinas Branch.
The journalist began his career as a reporter in the field of national and international Defense in the 1970s, a topic in which he became one of the biggest references in the country. Currently, he participated weekly in “Estado de Alerta com Roberto Godoy”, which debuted in October 2021.
