vor 150 years ago Philipp Reis died. Many people don't have much of a word for it today; they associate other names with the invention and triumph of a unique technology: telephony.
Reason enough to remember him. Reis comes from the Frankfurt area, moved to Friedrichsdorf as a child and became interested early on in how language is actually transmitted and recorded. He tinkered and tinkered with appropriate models and devices himself.
And it was he who finally successfully established a telephone connection for the first time in the world. how did he do that? What kind of person was Philipp Reis? Who helped him? How was his experiment received by experts? Yes, and why did the telephone only make its breakthrough to the masses much later?
We talk about all of this in this episode with Helmut Gold. He is the director of the Museum for Communication in Frankfurt. And not only knows rice, but also the history of the telephone very well.
