The United Nations wants to establish international law in the digital space. Negotiations have been going on for years. But democracies and autocrats cannot agree on the fundamentals. This is how the world is heading towards the digital apocalypse.
Dhe cyberspace has become a dangerous space. Cyberwar is everyday life. In Ukraine, armed drones play a role no less important than tanks or anti-aircraft missiles. In Gaza, the Israeli military is searching for Hamas fighters using facial recognition software obtained from public surveillance cameras. And then there is organized cybercrime. “Cybercrime as a Service” has emerged as a lucrative business model that generates more money than drug, human or weapons trafficking.
Reality is running away from diplomats
Can the United Nations do something to strengthen security in cyberspace? Hope for a free, open and secure Internet is dwindling. UN bodies are negotiating how to enforce international law in cyberspace, prevent an arms race and what can be done to combat crime. But reality is getting away from the diplomats.
