The Council of Ministers has appointed the former Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism Héctor Gómez as Spain’s ambassador to the United Nations. This is the second former member of the Cabinet whom Pedro Sánchez relocates to an Embassy, since this Tuesday the appointment of Miquel Iceta, former head of Culture and Sports, as ambassador to UNESCO (the United Nations organization for Education, Science and Culture) based in Paris (France).
As they are embassies to multilateral organizations, the Government does not have to request the please (conformity) to the host country, which means that the appointment can be processed very quickly. The Permanent Mission of Spain to the United Nations had been vacant since diplomat Ángel Santos Maraver resigned on June 13, to present himself as number two on Sumar’s list for Madrid.
For his part, Iceta will replace the former Minister of Culture José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes. The Embassy to UNESCO has traditionally been staffed by people outside the diplomatic career, but not that of the United Nations, based in New York (USA), one of the diplomatic missions with the most weight in Spanish foreign policy.
Héctor Gómez has sat in the Council of Ministers for less than eight months, since he was appointed on March 28, replacing Reyes Maroto, PSOE candidate for mayor of Madrid in the elections of May 28 of this year, and handed over the portfolio to the former mayor of Barcelona Jordi Hereu on the 21st. With a degree in Labor Sciences, a degree in Law and a diploma in the specialty of Tourism, the new Spanish ambassador to the UN lacks any diplomatic experience.
Born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife 45 years ago, he was a councilor of the Guía de Isora City Council (Tenerife) and an autonomous deputy in the Parliament of the Canary Islands until his appointment as general director of Turespaña in 2018. In the 2019 general elections he was elected deputy for Santa Cruz de Tenerife and since then he has been spokesperson for the Foreign Affairs Commission of Congress, head of delegation of the Conference on the Future of Europe and member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, according to his official resume. In 2021 he was appointed spokesperson for the Socialist Parliamentary Group in Congress and later president of the Constitutional Commission. He was re-elected deputy for Santa Cruz de Tenerife on July 23.
The Council of Ministers has also appointed Eva Granados Galiano as the new Secretary of State for Cooperation, spokesperson for the Socialist Group in the Senate from 2021 to 2023, deputy in the Parliament of Catalonia between 2010 and 2021 and member of the National Secretariat of the UGT of Catalonia from 2002 to 2010. This prominent Catalan socialist replaces Pilar Cancela, leader of the Galician PSOE. The Secretary of State for Cooperation, unlike embassies, has traditionally been headed by a person from the party, not by a diplomat.
