Brazilian company evaluated the performance of the Phenom 300E and Praetor 600 aircraft engines with “pure SAF”
Embraer announced this Sunday (15.Oct.2023) that completed flight tests with pure sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF (English acronym for Sustainable Aviation Fuels).
The initiative was carried out at the Brazilian company’s facilities in the city of Melbourne, Florida (USA). In the evaluation, the Phenom 300E and Praetor 600 aircraft were used.
In statementEmbraer said that the tests “provided significant information about the performance of an engine’s systems” when using a “100% sustainable fuel”. The company also stated that the measure represents a step “significant” for the company to achieve its goal of net zero emissions by 2040.
“We are proud of the successful flights of the Phenom 300E and Praetor 600 with 100% pure SAF. It is an important step as our operators are increasingly interested in and making use of this fuel”said the president and CEO of Embraer Executive Aviation, Michael Amalfitano, in the text.
According to the company, SAF is a renewable energy source that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional aviation fuel. Currently, Embraer aircraft use 50% of the sustainable resource mixed with aviation kerosene.
“Embraer’s commitment to sustainability is a fundamental part of its business strategy and the company continually explores new ways to reduce its environmental impact”the company stated.
In addition to the fuel issue, Embraer is working on building an electric plane. A prototype of the aircraft was exhibited for the first time on Tuesday (Oct 10) during the international mobility congress SAE Brazilheld in São Paulo.
The model has been used as a testing platform for sustainable aeronautical propulsion technologies. Since 2021, when it made its maiden flight, the plane has been carrying out tests for pre-competitive research into the integration of propulsion systems.
