You can breathe a sigh of relief – the Golf, the Tiguan and the GTI label are safe. VW boss Thomas Schäfer confirms the news to TopGear. Other model names are judged individually whether to stay or not. Now we won’t have sleepless nights if the name Tiguan disappears, but it is Volkswagen’s best-selling car worldwide. A good reason to keep that name.
TopGear spoke with Schäfer at the Munich motor show. There VW presented the new ID. GTI Concept as an advance on an electric GTI model. In 2027, the hot version of the electric ID.2 should see the light of day. That small EV could also have been called Golf. Schäfer says the Golf name was not used because the ID.2 is “not 100 percent a Golf.”
Soon no more Volkswagen ID?
Next year there will be a renewed version of the current Golf. After this, an electric Golf will arrive on the SSP platform in 2028. “That will be a real Golf, no compromises,” says the Volkswagen boss. He also talks about the future of ID badges: ‘It was necessary then, but we probably won’t need it in the future. We’re not sure yet whether we’ll drop it or keep it for some models,” says Schäfer.
Volkswagen also does not yet know whether the Golf and ID.3 will be merged as one model. The ID.3 got a facelift not too long ago, but it doesn’t look like the brand is going to replace the ID.3 with a new generation without significantly changing the shape.
