Washington.- The governments of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and Joe Biden negotiate an agreement to carry out massive deportations of foreign migrants to Mexico as of next May, according to what was announced The Washington Post.
According to statements by officials of the AMLO and Biden governmentsthe deportations of thousands of migrants from other countries would begin in May, when the national emergency in the United States due to the Covid-19 pandemic ends, and with it the Title 42the controversy Donald Trump immigration law to expel migrants on ‘fast track’.
“U.S. and Mexican officials said the two nationss have not reached an agreement on deportations. But the plan under discussion would reinforce the measures that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is preparing to announce next week to penalize asylum applications of those who cross into the United States illegally or do not seek protection in the nations through which they transit on the way to the US border,” notes The Washington Post.
The new agreement would come to replace and toughen Title 42 and the ‘Stay in Mexico’ programsince the migrants would not only be returned to Mexico, but formally deportedwhich would bring them more serious legal consequences, such as a ban on entering the United States for 5 years.
US officials stressed that AMLO has shown great willingness to help the Biden government in the immigration field. However, Mexico has warned on several occasions that it will not become a “safe third country”, that is, that it would not receive all the migrants expelled from the US while the processing of their asylum applications progresses.
“Mexico is the lynchpin of the plan. Authorities there have long resisted accepting back American deportees who are not Mexican citizens, but the government of the president Andrés Manuel López Obrador has shown a broad willingness to help Washington with border control measures,” they told The Washington Post.
For his part, the director general for North America at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Roberto Velascoconfirmed to the newspaper that there are ongoing talks with the Biden government, but did not give details or confirm the alleged agreement.
“There are ongoing conversations about the different scenarios given the changing legal, political and human mobility landscape,” he replied. “So far, There are no decisions on the next steps for our immigration cooperation.to,” Velasco said.
The American newspaper pointed out that one of the biggest challenges facing the new migration agreement is the “long-standing fear that the United States could try to impose its migration problems” on Mexico.
