Cs trusts that an IU-V proposal that blames the regional government for the ‘ecocide’ can go ahead with the support of the socialists, but the PSOE does not reveal its voting intention
The petitions committee of the European Union will vote today on the amendments to the final report made by the mission that toured the Mar Menor last February to study its environmental deterioration on the ground and propose measures for its restoration. Already during her visit, the president of said delegation, the Latvian Tatjana Zdanoka, from the Green Group, pointed out that the document would be the most important part of her work, and this, voted last September, has pointed to nitrates of agriculture and illegal irrigation as the main causes of water eutrophication. It also slips the possible misuse of EU funds in projects that have contributed to further deterioration and requests greater coordination between the different administrations involved to protect the ecosystem.
Now, these conclusions could also point directly to the regional government, if the amendment presented by the MEP of the Left, Sira Rego (IU-V), who proposes to include in the text an express mention of the responsibility of the regional Executive, goes ahead for his inaction. Citizens trust in that, who announced this Sunday that they will give their support and stressed that the support of the Liberal MEPs, a group of which they are a part, added to the votes of the Left group, where the IU-Greens is, would be enough to carry out this amendment if the PSOE and the Social Democrats decide to give it their support as well.
Sources from the orange party yesterday maintained some optimism regarding this possibility, although they did not have official confirmation from the socialist party. “Neither confirm nor deny,” they said.
In this sense, the MEP of the PSOE, Marcos Ros, assured LA TRUTH late yesterday afternoon that he still does not know the meaning of his group’s vote regarding this specific amendment. “We are deciding and we have to assess it,” he assured. Although he stressed that in the European Parliament the groups “many times do not vote as a block”, which makes it difficult to make previous calculations.
The aforementioned amendment, number two of a total of 103 presented, states that environmental damage is “a direct consequence of an unsustainable model of resource exploitation” and “a disorderly and wild change in land use” aggravated “by the Passivity of the Administrations and, in particular, of the Autonomous Administration, which has most of the necessary powers to stop this situation.
On the other hand, the same amendment also points out that the abandonment of functions “has acquired criminal overtones” with the opening of the process of the ‘Topillo case’, which judges the pollution caused by illegal desalination plants between 2012 and 2017, and points to the Ministry of Agriculture and the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) as responsible for not preventing it. The text also advocates incorporating the description of ‘ecocide’ to what happened.
develop the law
It so happens that most of the amendments presented come from the IU-V MEP, who signs 40 of the 103, while the Social Democrats have proposed 21 with the intention, said Marcos Ros, “of maintaining the original spirit of the text” with some key additions. “The most important is that the European Parliament demands that the regional law of the Mar Menor be applied, developed and complied with, because we have been lost for two years.”
Cs: «We have gathered support to shield the ILP in the text»
Cs announced yesterday that it has the necessary support to “shield” the recently approved Law on the Legal Personality of the Mar Menor in the report through an amendment that seeks to ensure that the European Commission protects, defends and promotes its development. A recognition that Vox, through the European Conservatives and Reformists, has proposed removing from the text. For their part, the Socialists also have support for withdrawing the proposal to study the possibility of opening gullets to the Mediterranean.
