A strong earthquake of 6.1 degrees of magnitude shook the region of Piurain northern Peru, and a vast surrounding area, causing fear among the population, but with no immediate report of victims or damage, reported the National Seismological Center.

The tremor was recorded at 3:26 am (local time), with an epicenter 13 km west of Sullana, a coastal city in the Piura region, about 1,000 km north of Lima, and at a depth of 25 km, indicated the Center.

The Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation of the Navy ruled out that the earthquake generates a tsunami, according to the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN).
“It was a very strong earthquake, but no damage has been reported”, an inhabitant of the city of Sullana told RPP radio. In various sectors of Sullana, on the border with Ecuador, people who slept in their houses took to the streets as a precautionary measure.

On July 30, 2021, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook the city of Sullana, leaving 40 injured and damaging 200 houses and four temples. On the coast of Piura are some of the most tourist resorts in the country, including Máncora, but the region is also a major agricultural producer.
Peru is shaken each year by at least 400 perceptible earthquakes. The country is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of extensive telluric activity that extends along the west coast of the American continent.
