United Kingdom.- In order to know how a baby reacts when it is in the mother’s womb and it eats food, scientists from the United Kingdom analyzed the behavior of the unborn through 4D ultrasound.
Like everything in life, there are still many myths around pregnancy, despite the scientific advances that have been made on the subject, especially in relation to the reactions that fetuses have when they are still in the woman’s uterus.
In order to understand some of the reactions that uterine babies have when the mother eats food, scientists who are members of the Durham University Fetal and Neonatal Research Laboratory, UKmade use of 4D ultrasound.
To detect the reactions of the little ones, the specialists performed 4D ultrasound on 100 pregnant women and, with them, they evaluated how the fetuses reacted to flavors such as carrot and kale. To do this, the women ate and, after a while, the study was done.
According to the results published in the journal “Psychological Science”babies whose mothers ate carrots showed a response close to a “laughing face”while the children of the females who ingested the kale showed a reaction more similar to a “crying face”.
Several studies have suggested that babies can taste and smell in the womb, but these are based on outcomes after birth,” said Beyza Ustun, lead researcher and postgraduate in the Fetal and Neonatal Research Laboratory in the Department of Psychology at the University of Durham.
The research, which also involved scientists from the National Center for Scientific Research at the University of Burgundy (France) and the University of Aston, Birmingham (United Kingdom), included a total of 100 women, aged 18 to 40. of age, who passed from the 32nd to the 36th week of gestation.
For the study, pregnant women took a capsule containing about 400 mg of carrot or about 400 mg of kale powder. After 20 minutes, the reactions of the fetuses were captured by ultrasound. Also, one hour before the analysis, women should avoid eating foods or drinking flavored beverages.
“Facial reactions observed in both flavor groups, compared to fetuses in a control group who were not exposed to either flavor, showed that exposure to just a small amount of carrot or kale flavor was sufficient to stimulate a reaction,” the team said in a statement.

However, it should be clear that fetuses do not know what is tasty or if it tastes ugly, nor do they differentiate between sweet, salty or bitterThis is due to the fact that they do not have a previous report, as explained by Miriam Giménez, President of District VI of the College of Obstetricians of the province of Buenos Aires, consulted by the media Infobae.
