The upcoming games in the Assassin’s Creed series will have varying lengths and not all will follow the open-world RPG model that has characterized the series since 2017 with Assassin’s Creed Origin.
During yesterday’s showcase, it was announced that Mirage will be similar to the first installments of the series and will be priced at $ 50 for the standard edition. During an interview with IGN, Assassin’s Creed Vice President and Executive Producer Marc-Alexis Côté explained that the price reflects the scale of the project.
“It’s a smaller Assassin’s Creed project“said Côté. “It was conceived [e] built to celebrate the 15th anniversary. That’s why we’re using our modern Valhalla engine to build a smaller game that pays homage to our original game by focusing more on stealth, close combat, parkour, and a denser city returning to our roots in the Middle East with Baghdad as being fulcrum“.
When asked if Mirage will have a similar duration to the old chapters of the series, which lasted around 15-20 hours for the main story, Côté replied “Yes, you should expect something more like our original games“.
But it looks like Mirage won’t be an absolute novelty. Assassin’s Creed Infinity, the next hub platform for the series, has been designed to support a variety of approaches that Ubisoft will be able to work on. While the platform’s first game will be codename Red, a grand open-world RPG set in feudal Japan, not all future games in the saga will share this formula.
“I believe the Infinity approach allows us to have experiences of different dimensions,” explained Côté. “Not everything has to be a 150 hour RPG, right?”.
Côté has confirmed that Codename Hexe, the second game for Infinity, will not be an RPG. While he didn’t say what Hexe’s genre and duration will be, it seems Ubisoft wants to create a variety of game types within the Assassin’s Creed universe. Côté says this “will bring more diversity to the places we choose to visit and the way we choose to represent those periods”.
The different durations of future games will also lead to different pricing, of course. So we will be able to find other games from 50 euros or even cheaper.
“Sometimes there will also be free experiences, which I think are a great way to entice players to come back“said Côté.”We had a great experience with the latest crossover stories for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. He brought back a lot of players to Odyssey. It got a lot of players interested in Odyssey to take an interest in Valhalla, because we had seen a lot of players not switch from Odyssey to Valhalla, and that piqued their interest and got them to switch to another product and all of this for free. So I think this aspect will be on top of our thoughts as we build Infinity“.
In short, a lot of meat in the fire for Ubisoft, which is betting its future on one of the pillars of its history.
