Crimes are committed daily in all parts of the world, but some of them have stood out more in the international news due to their impact, shocking people and raising the question of why they happen.
Some minors have been prosecuted for crimes they have committed, being defined as atrocious because of their young age and the vehemence they maintained to react in the most violent way to situations that became investigation cases.

Eric Smith
Eric M. Smith was born on January 22, 1980 in New York, United States. He was a very happy and affectionate boy with his family, especially with his grandparents who were an important part of him.
His grandmother Red Wilson described the grandson’s childhood in the medium ‘CBS News’: “He always came in and gave us hugs and kisses. He liked being a clown with all of us too much.”
At 13 years old Smith was diagnosed with intermittent explosive disorder -behavior characterized by uncontrollable expressions of anger-, due to the constant bullying he suffered from his schoolmates, which caused him to suffer from out-of-control outbursts.

On August 2, 1993, the boy, aged 13, murdered Derrick Robie, a four-year-old boy, in a wooded area near a park where he lived. The minor’s death was caused by strangulation and a strong blow to the head with a rock.
On August 16, 1994, 16 days after the crime, Eric Smith was convicted of second degree murder – intentional unplanned murder – and sentenced to life in prison. Nevertheless, he was granted parole in the month of October 2021after appearing before the Parole Board, although he must return to prison on November 17.
Joshua Phillips
Joshua Earl Patrick Phillips was born on March 17, 1984 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. From the age of 16 he is Known for the murder of his eight-year-old neighbor in 1999.

On the third of November the little Maddie Clifton was killed by the American with a baseball bat. The search for the infant ended after the attacker’s mother found the girl’s body inside the base of her son’s bed.
On July 6, 1999, the minor was convicted of first degree murderor -premeditated murder- and sentenced to life in prison at the Cross City Correctional Institution in Florida, United States.
Lionel Tate
Lionel Alexander Tate was born on January 30, 1987 in Florida, United States. He is the youngest American to be sentenced to life in prison. for the murder of a six-year-old girl.
On July 28, 1999, Tate murdered Tiffany Eunick. The little girl was found with various injuries to her body: a skull fracture, a fractured rib and a swollen brain.

With only 12 years of age, in 2001, the American was sentenced in the Broward County Circuit by Judge Joel T. Lazarus to life imprisonment.
“Lionel Tate’s acts were cold, callous and unspeakably cruel,” Lazarus said during the trial.
Jon Venables and Robert Thompson
This is one of the most surprising cases, since it was carried out by two minors together. Jon Venables was born on August 13, 1982 and Robert Thompson on November 23 of the same year.
On February 12, 1993, the children, aged 11, murdered little James Patrick Bulger, two and a half years oldon a train track near Walton & Anfield station, where he was tortured with rocks, metal bars, batteries and blue paint until he died.

On November 24, 1993, Thompson and Venables were arraigned in South Sefton Juvenile Court. Two days later, were sentenced for manslaughter with indefinite detention. However, in June 2001, being adults, they were released from prison.
This decision caused a great negative impact for the parents of the victim and for many people, creating a movement with the name ‘Justice for James’which had the participation of more than 300 volunteers.
In 2010, Jon Venables was sentenced to three years in prison for distributing child pornography. On February 7, 2018, he returned to jail for possession of the same material upon pleading guilty.
