Gazprom, Russia’s largest energy company, announced on Friday (19) that it will stop sending gas to Germany for three days from August 31 to carry out maintenance on the only pumping facility in operation.
“On August 31, 2022, the Trent 60, the only operational pumping equipment, will be shut down for three days to carry out technical service and routine maintenance work,” the company said on the Telegram messaging platform.
According to Gazprom, “the set of works according to the current service contract will be carried out in partnership with specialists from the Siemens company”.
“According to Siemens company documentation, it is necessary to carry out technical maintenance of the equipment every 1,000 hours, which includes the chassis review to detect cracks, deformations, burn spots”, as well as the inspection of other equipment systems , informed the Russian company.
Once the maintenance work is completed, the gas pumping will be restored to the pre-outage level of 33 million cubic meters per day.
Gazprom had already announced on July 27 that it would cut gas pumping to a fifth of the pipeline’s capacity, a decision that Germany said was part of a “strategy of war”.
Russia has been gradually reducing pumping through the Nord Stream citing technical problems and the need to repair Siemens turbines that are part of the pipeline.
At the same time, Moscow says the situation could be resolved with the start of Nord Stream 2 operations.
This pipeline never came into operation because Germany froze its certification on February 22, the day after Russia recognized the independence of the self-proclaimed people’s republics of Lugansk and Donetsk, and two days before the country began its military offensive in Ukraine.
