With the consent of Lithuania, in the future it is possible to build a dedicated railway and road from the main territory of Russia to Kaliningrad. Such a proposal was put forward on July 6 by the governor of the Kaliningrad region Anton Alikhanov.
“It is possible to build a parallel [дорогу]for example, to allocate it to some separate enterprise, to make some kind of international regime for its functioning, so that it would be a guaranteed land connection of our semi-exclave with the main territory, ”Alikhanov suggested to an interview with“RIA News“.
The governor clarified that he meant freight traffic, but added that the possibility of passenger transport on this road could also be considered.
“Maybe we can make some kind of road inside this corridor, which would be, let’s say, limited by some kind of dedicated corridor, beyond which it is impossible to move out. The highway is the same, both railway and automobile, without the possibility of turning into Lithuania towards Kaliningrad. Why not?” he added.
Alikhanov specified that such a project could be technically implemented only with the consent of Lithuania and on the basis of joint agreements.
The ban on the transit of goods to the Kaliningrad region from Lithuania came into force at midnight on June 18. It was introduced as part of the fifth package of anti-Russian sanctions of the EU countries. At the same time, speaking about restrictions, the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that there was no blockade of Kaliningrad.
The governor of the Kaliningrad region, in turn, called the transit ban illegal. In his opinion, such decisions can have far-reaching consequences for the EU.
