The company stated that the “climate denialism” should not be monetized on the social network. Furthermore, “Misleading announcements should not detract from important conversations about the climate crisis”.
In the document, the platform cites the report released in early April by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The document highlights the urgency of the climate crisis and calls for reductions “immediate and profound” of emissions.
Twitter claims to recognize that “Misleading information about climate change could undermine efforts to protect the planet”. Despite the initiative, the company does not detail the specific measures it will take, such as banning or deleting accounts that post wrong information on the subject.
With the announcement, the company follows other tech companies that have announced similar measures regarding fake weather news.
Pinterest announced in early April that it will ban users who share incorrect weather information from the platform. Google said in 2019 that it would now exclude content from “climate change deniers”including advertisers.
SUSTAINABILITY
The platform also says it is accelerating sustainability efforts and wants to reduce its carbon footprint – calculating the emission of greenhouse gases.
Twitter’s goal is to achieve 100% carbon neutral energy supply in data centers until the end of this year. The goal was announced in 2019.
