The delay in replacing children’s games in Sauces and in maintaining other areas reflects the deterioration of the green areas of the Ensanche
In the days in which the City Council has brought together institutions, neighborhood groups and other entities of Cartagena to contribute ideas on the modernization of the municipality in the next ten years, within the ‘Cartagena 5.0’ strategy and the Urban Agenda, three parks of the Ensanche have reflected with their deterioration the need to focus efforts on one of the axes of these plans: renew and improve the maintenance of green areas.
The Parque Sauces, the Paseo del Jardín and the Parque del Ensanche suffer from a lack of civility and a deficit in the conservation of cleanliness, gardening, furniture and children’s games.
After having spent more than 200,000 euros on the remodeling of Parque Sauces, whose works lasted almost four years, the site still does not provide the service that residents expect. The damage caused by hooligans after its inauguration, in December, forced the Local Police to seal some. And the municipal government team ordered the contracting company to remove some equipment and the swings, none of which were basket swings. More than two months have passed and the families, and especially the children, are waiting for them to be replaced.
In this time expired posters and posts have appeared. And there are the large sharp stones on the edge of areas where children run. The gardens are not fenced either, so the plants do not last long in good condition.
Graffiti and damage
In the surroundings of the municipal athletics track and the Mare Nostrum public school, an area with a lot of daily traffic, there are benches and walls with graffiti, large trees that have not been replaced, unevenness in the pavement in many sections and dirt from dog urine. There is also a large poster, unreadable for years, of some Plan E works.
But the most abandoned area is the Parque del Ensanche, which overlooks the Ronda del Ferrol and the Avenida de Murcia, near the Cenit shopping centre. As there are playgrounds in a very precarious state and without rubber flooring, broken pergolas with little vegetation, dirt paths where it is difficult to walk through holes and other problems, the park has lost its attractiveness and public. There is also no kiosk bar, as there are in Los Juncos and near the Palacio de Deportes. Of course, in the first area there is one still closed and in the other there is only the frame.
