However, one of these greatest guests of honor was left along the way. American Robert Persichitti, 102, died last week before arriving in France. He had to be flown to a hospital from a ship traveling along the coast of Europe and died in a hospital in Germany.

“Doctor was with him. He was not alone and it was nice for him to be,” Persichitti’s friend and traveling companion Al DeCarlo told to WHAM local channel.

Persichitti did not take part in the Normandy landings on June 6, 1944, but instead served as a radioman on the command ship USS Eldorado in the Pacific, including Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Guam.
