On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on Western countries to make more efforts to achieve a just peace that ends the Ukrainian crisis, expressing at the same time his confidence that Kiev will emerge victorious.
The day after the leaders of a number of countries around the world commemorated the eightieth anniversary of the Normandy landings, which led to the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, Zelensky spoke to the French Parliament in the capital, Paris.
He expressed, before French representatives, his hope that the summit, which Switzerland will host later this month regarding peace in Ukraine, would accelerate a just end to the conflict.
He said, “The peace summit could become a formula that brings us closer to a just end” to this crisis.
He added, “I am grateful for everything you are doing, and it is a lot. But for a just peace, more efforts must be made.”
He warned that 80 years after the Normandy landings in World War II, Europe was “unfortunately no longer a continent at peace.”
-Victory is possible
Zelensky, who was received by French President Emmanuel Macron this Friday afternoon at the Elysee Palace, stressed that victory is possible despite the Russian advance on the front. “Can we win this battle? Of course,” he said.
He warned that “this battle is at a crossroads,” but “for a just peace, more is needed (…) This is not a criticism.”
Kiev continues to demand that Europe increase its military support as Russia achieves territorial gains in recent months in eastern and northern Ukraine, and at a time when allies are concerned about the potential consequences of the crisis if Donald Trump wins the upcoming US presidential elections.
