Waiting for the next weekend, during which F1 will stop at Paul Ricard for the French Grand Prix, the opinions of the insiders in the Circus are still focused on the latest races held in Austria, between the results of the Sprint and those of the GP real. Two tests which, on the one hand, demonstrated the efficiency of the engine Red Bullcontrasted only by a high degradation of the tires that allowed the Ferrari to be able to win on Sunday with Charles Leclerc.
Among the various analyzes provided on the weekend staged at the Red Bull Ring there is also that of Masashi Yamamotoformer head of Honda F1 and today consultant of the power units of the Anglo-Austrian team: “It was a good race, but tough at the same time – told the Japanese site as-web – we did our best at the start, but the tires were getting worse and worse. I think Leclerc was the fastest of all, but Max did a great job of keeping second place and setting the fastest lap. Towards the end of the race, hopes rekindled, but the Ferrari was still faster. However, I believe that the Red Bull has given its all. We won the Sprint and finished second in the race, and we haven’t lost much in terms of points in the championship ”.
Speaking of the overall performance of Red Bull, Yamamoto believes that the latter can count on power units (still developed by Honda, despite the Japanese manufacturer’s departure in 2021) that are superior in terms of performance compared to those of Ferrari: “It is true that Ferrari was strong – he added – but looking at Sainz’s exploded engine I think HRC (Honda Racing Corporation) and Red Bull Powertrains are better in terms of overall performance, including reliability. In fact, I don’t think the situation has changed in the fight for the title. Initially I thought Ferrari had the advantage in the four races in July, with the exception of the next race in France. I thought that, at best, there would be two wins and two losses, and realistically now the balance could be one win and three losses ”.
A year ago Red Bull won in France with Max Verstappen signing pole position and opting for a two-stop race against Lewis Hamilton’s single stop. The reigning world champion caught up with the Englishman on the penultimate lap overtaking him on the Mistral straight. The goal of the Milton Keynes team is to respond to the Ferrari double scored at Silverstone and the Red Bull Ring before the winding Hungaroring, a track that is always perfect to enhance the qualities of F1-75.
