Retrofit solution: indicators from Busch and Müller for e-bikes

To date, indicators are not officially permitted on bicycles; anyone who wants to turn must extend their arm. The Federal Ministry of Transport has now announced a new regulation. The first offers are in prospect.
ABending on a bike can sometimes be a tricky matter. In addition to the general risk of being overlooked, cyclists are often confronted with motor obstacles when manually indicating a change of direction. Braking with one arm while initiating the curve at the same time is tricky and even tricky. The same applies to turn-by-turn directions with loaded bikes, for example when using child seats.
An obvious solution is a turn signal. But there have been various hurdles so far. At least from a technical point of view, feasibility is guaranteed with the increasing popularity of e-bikes. The batteries are powerful, the problem of the power supply is no longer necessary. The position of the legislator, which has only allowed indicators on multi-track bicycles, trailers and S-Pedelecs since 2017, has previously appeared to be more serious. Accordingly, manufacturers were reluctant to develop suitable systems. That could change because, according to an announcement by the Federal Ministry of Transport, direction indicators for bicycles will be approved in the future.
Flashing like on a motorcycle
The lighting experts from Busch and Müller were ahead of the curve and presented the Turntec system for subsequent connection to the light output of the e-bike battery at the most recent Eurobike. The control unit works like on motorcycles, reacts differently to long or short taps and has failure detection. Horn and high beam can be connected as an option. Turntec will be available later this year. The legally compliant direction indicator is not cheap at 350 euros.
E-bikes with motor support up to 25 km/h will benefit from the planned new regulation. Organic cyclists are left behind. In contrast to electric bikes, analog bikes lack a constant power supply, even with powerful dynamos. Buffer storage could help. But until suitable solutions are ready for the market with state approval, it's still a matter of pointing the finger.
