Vice-president states that Executive seeks expense reductions; Lula rules out adjustments in health and education
The vice president Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) said this Saturday (June 15, 2024) that the government should “seek” to cut spending in “short, medium and long term”. Without specifying dates, Alckmin defended a review of expenses, as ministers Fernando Haddad (Farm) and Simone Tebet (Planning and Budgeting).
“There is no definition of a date yet, but the fact is that we must try to have cuts in the short term, measures that have resulted faster, in the medium and long term, because you price it”Alckmin told journalists in Campos do Jordão, in São Paulo.
The Minister of Industry also made the statement at the 17th Road Freight Transport Congress of the Federation of Cargo Transport Companies of the State of São Paulo, in Campos do Jordão.
Haddad stated on Thursday (June 13) that the government’s economic team is focusing in the coming months on reviewing expenses.
The vice president said that it is necessary “do more with less money”.
“The government is committed to the fiscal framework and, therefore, we have to reach the zero target. And we have a primary deficit. On the one hand, improving revenue by combating tax evasion, on the other, reducing expenses. It’s about reviewing expenses, analyzing the efficiency of each investment, doing more with less money”declared Alckmin.
One of the alternatives studied by the Executive is to limit the real growth in spending on education and health to 2.5%, the same percentage established for other categories in the fiscal framework.
In Italy, the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) discarded the measure. The Chief Executive said he will not make fiscal adjustments “on top of the poor”.
However, Lula said he will hear from Haddad next week to discuss the economic agenda.
