Silvio Costa Filho (Ports and Airports) says that the terminal concessionaire should start diagnosing the structure soon
The Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filhostated this Tuesday (May 21, 2024) that the water level on the runway Salgado Filho International Airportin Porto Alegre (RS), has fallen and the expectation is that the terminal will be dry from the weekend onwards.
Costa Filho informed that it is not yet possible to estimate how soon it will be possible to resume operations at the largest airport in Rio Grande do Sul, but that, with the drop in water levels, damage inspections are close to starting. He made the statements in an interview with GloboNews.
Until Fraport, the Salgado Filho concessionaire, carries out a complete assessment of all damage caused to the electrical and structural parts of the terminal, operations at the airport will remain suspended indefinitely.
Salgado Filho has been closed since May 6th due to flooding caused by heavy rains that hit the entire Rio Grande do Sul.
To connect the capital of Rio Grande do Sul to the Brazilian air network, the government released the Canoas Air Base (RS) for commercial flights on Monday (May 20).
The terminal is located in the metropolitan area of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul and had already been released by the FAB (Brazilian Air Force) to transport donations destined for the population affected by historic floods.
Fraport will operate, on an emergency basis, the Canoas base for commercial flights.
In addition to releasing the air base, the government also articulated the relocation of flights originating and ending in Salgado Filho to regional airports in the State and Santa Catarina.
