International warnings continued about the dangers of the spread of epidemics, especially “cholera,” in the Gaza Strip in light of the scarcity of clean water and high temperatures, amid confirmations that the majority of Gaza’s children suffer from severe food poverty and that 25,000 sick and wounded people need treatment outside the Strip.
Yesterday, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) warned of the possibility of a cholera outbreak in the Gaza Strip in light of the scarcity of clean water and high temperatures.
UNRWA explained in a post on the “X” platform that “with minimal access to clean water in the Gaza Strip and the continued harsh summer heat, there is a risk of disease and drought spreading.”
The agency added, “There are real fears of a possible cholera outbreak in Gaza, which will further deteriorate the inhumane living conditions.”
UNRWA concluded by saying, “The people of Gaza need an immediate ceasefire.”
The Israeli war on Gaza, which has been ongoing since October 7, left more than 119,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and about 10,000 missing amid massive destruction and famine that claimed the lives of dozens.
In this context, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced yesterday that 25,000 sick and wounded people in the Gaza Strip need treatment abroad and were unable to travel during the Israeli aggression.
The ministry added in a statement: “25,000 sick and wounded people needed treatment abroad during the aggression and were unable to do so, amounting to 80.5 percent of the total cases.”
The Ministry explained that the number of patients and wounded who were able to travel for treatment abroad amounted to only about 4,895, representing about 19.5 percent of the total number of patients and wounded.
Since the closure of the Rafah land border crossing with Egypt, following Israel’s control over the Palestinian side of it on May 7, coinciding with the start of a ground military operation in the city of Rafah, no sick or wounded person has been able to leave the Gaza Strip, according to previous statements by the Ministry.
In addition, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) revealed that 9 out of every 10 children in Gaza cannot consume nutrients from sufficient food groups to ensure their healthy growth and development.
The organization said in a statement, “Months of hostilities and restrictions imposed on humanitarian aid led to the collapse of the food and health systems in Gaza, leading to catastrophic consequences for children and their families.”
She stated that “data collected between December 2023 and April 2024 revealed that 9 out of every 10 children in the Gaza Strip, which has been subjected to Israeli bombing since last October, suffer from severe food poverty, which means that they are fed on two or fewer food groups per day.” To survive.
