Regarding the start of this year’s world championship, the conditions for witnessing a fight between Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen there were all: between the Ferrari driver’s state of form and some reliability problems of Red Bull, the hope of witnessing a duel for the rest of the season has actually been shattered. Between Verstappen’s domination and the errors of the Ferrari pit wall, with related technical KOs of the Reds, the championship decidedly took the path of Milton Keynes, with the Dutchman who could even win his second world title already in Singapore, the first of the six GPs remaining.
Regardless of when he can achieve this goal, for the Red Bull driver the 2022 season finale could coincide with the signing on new records of the history of this sport, starting with higher number of points earned in a year. At present, this record belongs to Lewis Hamilton, capable of obtaining 433 points in 2019. However, after the victory in the Italian GP, Verstappen is stopped at 335 and, also calculating the sprint race to be held in Brazil, the result is certainly not far.
Even more affordable, however, seems to be the record on the wider gap between the world champion and the 2nd classified: nine years after Sebastian Vettel – who in 2013 closed with a gap of 155 on Alonso – the German could be ousted from this ranking, thanks to the 116 points that Verstappen currently boasts on Leclerc. The field of highest number of fastest race laps in a year: to make it happen, the Red Bull number 1 will have to record the best time in all six races scheduled. Should it fail on one of these occasions, Mad Max would equal would join an elite made up of Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen, with 10 ‘fastest laps’ each (the Finn managed to cross this finish line twice). Finally, two other firsts are not impossible, albeit not easy to achieve: the highest number of victories in a year and the highest number of consecutive successes.
