Last April, the United States recorded a record number of foreigners residing in the country, reaching 47 million, the majority with legal status, according to a study published this Wednesday (01) by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) group. .
According to the CIS, one in seven people living in the US is a foreigner, representing 14.3% of the country’s population, the highest percentage in the last 112 years. According to the 2020 Census, the population of the United States exceeds 330 million people. The CIS projects that the foreign resident population in the US will reach 14.9% of the country’s total by September 2023, if “the current trend continues”.
While it attributes the increase in the population of foreigners living in the United States to the arrival of illegal immigrants, the report notes that immigrants living in the country with legal documents make up three-quarters of all foreign-born residents.
The report further highlights that in the first 16 months of President Joe Biden’s administration, the total population of foreign nationals living in the US increased by two million, twice as fast as the population born in the country.
