It grows fear among the highest levels of the Democratic Party over Joe Biden’s defeat in the November elections. This is what Politico writes today, underlining that the fear is now being expressed by exponents and strategists who until a few months ago were confident, despite the generalized lack of enthusiasm on the part of the Dem base for the re-election of the 81-year-old president, in the possibility of a new defeat of Donald Trump.
Now though five months after the vote, anxiety has become “palpable trepidation”writes the American site which interviewed over a dozen party leaders and strategists, underlining that what they say with microphones turned on is very different from what they confess to friends and colleagues in confidence.
Trump triumphs in the polls, fears of an authoritarian drift
“You don’t want to be the one who says on the record that we are doomed, that the campaign is going badly or that Biden is making mistakes, no one wants to be”, admits a Democratic strategist who is in close contact with the White House and for this reason demands the anonymity. But Biden’s stubbornly negative polls in such crucial elections are ‘causing panic’he adds, stating that it’s not a question of saying “oh God, Mitt Romney could win, but of saying oh God, democracy could end”, referring to the fears of an authoritarian drift in the event of Trump’s return to the White House.
What causes panic is the fact that, despite the trials and the slew of accusations, Trump is clearly ahead in polls in key states. And, even more worryingly, in April she raised more money than Biden. So much so that now the tycoon feels strong enough to launch attacks even in historically Democratic territories, with New Jersey and New York, or electoral groups, such as Hispanics and African Americans, historically hostile to him and the Republicans.
The list of reasons for a possible defeat
The Democratic Party’s financiers are also worriedand so one of their advisors began drawing up a list with over twenty reasons why Biden could be defeated, from immigration to inflation, too old age, and the unpopularity of his deputy Kamala Harris, at the risk that Robert Kennedy Jr. will steal votes from him.
“The financiers pay me by the hour to know what I think, so I thought it would be easier to show them the list, so while they read I have a drink”, the consultant tells Politico, admitting that the list of reasons for which Biden might win “is so short they don’t even have to keep it on their phone.”
