71 years old a man stabbed a 6-year-old boy to death in Illinois, USA, reported, among other things BBC and The Guardian. At the same time, he stabbed the boy’s 32-year-old mother, who was seriously injured.
According to the Will County Sheriff’s Office, the bloodshed is the result of the conflict between Hamas and Israel in the Middle East. The victims were Muslims, and the stabber had shouted “Muslims must die” before the act.
The violence happened in Plainfield, Illinois, about 60 kilometers from Chicago.
The stabber was the victims’ landlord Joseph Czuba. He had attacked a Muslim family’s apartment on Saturday morning and stabbed both mother and son several times.
The mother managed to escape to the bathroom, where she was able to call 911 and continue the fight against Czuba.
When the police arrived, they found Czuba sitting in the yard of the house. Mother and son were found badly injured inside the house.
Both were rushed to the hospital, where the 6-year-old boy died from his injuries. He had been stabbed 26 times, according to the sheriff’s office.
The mother was seriously injured, but is expected to survive.
Czuba is now awaiting trial on suspicion of murder, attempted murder, two hate crimes and assault.
The Muslim rights organization Cair said in X, formerly on Twitter, that the community was deeply shocked by the bloodshed. The organization appealed to people to stop anti-Islamic rhetoric and anti-Palestinian racism.
The extremist organization Hamas attacked Israel a little over a week ago on Saturday. More than 1,400 people died in the Hamas attack.
After the attack, Israel began military operations against Gaza. Since then, more than 2,450 people have been killed in Israeli shelling, Palestinian officials have reported.
