The Charter of the United Nations, “including the principles of respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all States, can and will serve as a basis for achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine“. This is reported in the final communiqué on a framework for peace in Ukraine approved by around eighty out of 92 countries participating in the Buergenstock summit, in central Switzerland.
The countries that signed the final communiqué of the peace summit in Ukraine in Buergenstock, Switzerland, undertake to work in particular on three aspects of the war that has been ongoing for over two years: nuclear safety, food safety and prisoners, including deported Ukrainian children. The participants had “a fruitful, comprehensive and constructive exchange of different views on paths towards a framework for global, just and lasting peace, based on international law, including the United Nations Charter.”
In particular, “we reaffirm our commitment to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State, the principles of sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of all States, including Ukraine , within their internationally recognized borders, including territorial waters, and the settlement of disputes by peaceful means as principles of international law”.
Ukrainian nuclear power plants and facilities, including Zaporizhzhia, “shall operate safely and securely under the full sovereign control of Ukraine and in line with the principles of the IAEA and under its supervision. Any threat or use of nuclear weapons in the context of the ongoing war against Ukraine is unacceptable“.
Secondly, the statement continues, “global food security depends on the production and uninterrupted supply of food products. In this regard, free, complete and safe commercial navigation, as well as access to seaports in the Black Sea, are essential and in the Sea of Azov. Attacks against merchant ships in ports and along the entire route are unacceptable. Food safety must not be used as a weapon in any way Ukrainian agricultural products should be supplied safely and free of charge to interested third countries.”
Third, “all prisoners of war must be released by exchange. All illegally deported and displaced Ukrainian children, and all other illegally detained Ukrainian civilians, must be repatriated to Ukraine. We believe that achieving peace requires involvement and dialogue between all parties. We have therefore decided to take concrete steps in the future in the areas mentioned above, with further commitment from the representatives of all parties involved.”
