Yesterday, the UAE expressed its deep concern over the recent hostilities between Armenia and Azerbaijan, including military clashes on the border areas, and reports of casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure, and stressed the need to avoid escalation and combine efforts to sustain the ceasefire and work to control self by both parties.
In a statement before the Security Council regarding the item entitled, a letter dated September 13, 2022 addressed to the President of the Security Council by the Permanent Representative of Armenia to the United Nations: “Out of our keenness to avoid another escalation, we see the necessity of concerted efforts to sustain the ceasefire, and work to Self-restraint by both parties, which was also confirmed by the statement of the Secretary-General of the United Nations on September 13 on these situations.
She added, “We welcome the two parties’ reaching a ceasefire agreement, and we appreciate the mediation efforts that led to this agreement.”
In the statement, made by Amira Al-Hafeiti, Deputy Permanent Representative of the State to the United Nations, the UAE called for building on this positive development, represented in the ceasefire, and for the two parties to be able to reach more comprehensive agreements that lead to achieving sustainable peace that avoids exposing the lives of civilians to the dangers of war. .
Al-Hafeiti noted that any new escalation in the context of the increasing crises the world is facing, and the accompanying human suffering that is difficult to contain, poses a threat to the current fragile global situation.
She added, “In this council, we must comply with our responsibilities and work to prevent the current crisis from worsening, to encourage the two parties to return to the negotiating table, and to resolve their disputes by peaceful and diplomatic means.”
Al-Hafeiti indicated, according to the statement, that the tripartite agreement for the year 2020 laid a foundation for supporting stability in the region, adding: “We witnessed positive and promising developments at the beginning of this year regarding the parties’ progress in the negotiations, and we also saw encouraging signs to address the outstanding issues between them, which requires restoring this momentum and making tangible progress in the peace process.”
In this regard, she expressed the UAE’s hope that the two sides would engage in mediation efforts constructively and in good faith, to reach a lasting and peaceful solution, and to spare the region any repercussions that might result from any further escalation, especially on regional stability and peace.
According to the statement, the UAE reiterated the importance of maintaining the ceasefire, and that the two parties continue efforts to reach a peaceful solution, in line with international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
Al-Hafiti thanked Miroslav Jenka, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas, for his comprehensive briefing on the recent developments between Armenia and Azerbaijan. She also welcomed the participation of representatives of Armenia and Azerbaijan in yesterday’s meeting.
