The Mossos d’Esquadra have arrested two men linked to white supremacism accused of attacking Barcelona metro passengers and a private security guard for xenophobic reasons, whom they chose as victims based on their origin. As reported this Wednesday by the Catalan police, the attacks occurred on April 16, when the detainees insulted and harassed several subway passengers, with xenophobic comments, and also ended up hitting a security guard who intervened to stop the attacks.
The alleged attackers, aged 32 and 33, have been arrested by agents of the Central Unit for Hate and Discrimination Crimes (UCDOD) of the Mossos d’Esquadra, accused of crimes of injury and crimes against fundamental rights, following a investigation in which it is not ruled out that there are more victims.
According to the investigation, the detainees, with a history of crimes against property, entered a Barcelona metro car on April 16 and began to rebuke and insult passengers of foreign origin for xenophobic reasons in the presence of the rest of users. A security guard intervened to stop the insults, at which point he was attacked by the detainees, one of whom pushed him to the ground while the other tried to strangle him with his hands. While they attacked him, the Mossos d’Esquadra add, the detainees uttered racist insults against the security guard, who suffered several injuries as a result of the attack, due to his origin.
The alleged attackers are linked to violent far-right supremacist extremist movements and, when they committed the attacks, they were wearing symbols typical of that ideology. The Catalan police, who have so far identified the security guard and another of the victims, are continuing their efforts to locate other people attacked by the detainees.
